The Sea Needs You: Building International Cooperation for Marine Conservation

The Sea Needs You is an Erasmus+ Mobility of Youth Workers project designed to promote marine ecosystem conservation, encourage sustainable fishing practices, and strengthen environmental awareness through international cooperation. Held in Kastamonu, Türkiye, the project brought together youth workers from Italy, Azerbaijan, Ireland, Spain, and Türkiye to address the growing challenges facing marine ecosystems through non-formal education, scientific learning, and intercultural collaboration. Throughout the mobility, participants not only expanded their knowledge but also transformed that knowledge into practical actions that can benefit their local communities.

One of the project's main objectives was to improve participants' understanding of the threats affecting marine biodiversity. Through expert-led symposiums, workshops, discussions, and research-based activities, participants explored topics such as endangered marine species, invasive organisms, marine pollution, unsustainable fishing practices, and the impact of human activities on aquatic ecosystems. These learning experiences strengthened their ability to analyze environmental problems, evaluate scientific information, develop practical solutions, and better understand the importance of evidence-based environmental protection.

The project placed a strong emphasis on experiential learning by encouraging participants to actively engage with environmental issues and local communities. Awareness campaigns, educational materials, creative exhibitions, and practical environmental activities demonstrated how individual actions can contribute to protecting marine life. Participants also met with local fishermen and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge, discuss sustainable fishing practices, and gain first-hand insight into the challenges faced by coastal communities. These experiences encouraged participants to become active ambassadors for environmental awareness while improving their communication, cooperation, and community engagement skills.

Beyond environmental education, the project created valuable opportunities for intercultural dialogue and personal development. Participants introduced their national cultures, traditions, cuisine, music, and customs while learning about the rich cultural heritage of Türkiye. Working together in multicultural teams helped them strengthen their leadership, teamwork, communication, empathy, creativity, and presentation skills. Through continuous reflection activities and the Youthpass process, participants evaluated their personal learning journey, recognized the competences they had developed, and became more confident in applying those skills both professionally and personally.

Ultimately, The Sea Needs You demonstrated that protecting marine ecosystems requires much more than environmental knowledge—it depends on education, international cooperation, scientific awareness, community engagement, and active citizenship. By combining practical experiences, intercultural exchange, and collaborative learning, the project empowered participants to become more responsible youth workers capable of promoting sustainable environmental practices within their own organizations and communities. The knowledge, skills, and partnerships established throughout the project will continue to contribute to future environmental initiatives and inspire long-term positive impact beyond the duration of the mobility.
