We became a partner in Urban Precipices. Bringing together organizations from Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Türkiye, the project aims to draw attention to the environmental injustices caused by the urban heat island effect and contribute to the development of fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable urban spaces. 🌱

Urban Heat Islands and Environmental Justice

The concentration of concrete and asphalt surfaces, the lack of green spaces, and intensive urban development can cause certain areas of cities to become significantly warmer than their surroundings. This phenomenon, known as the urban heat island effect, does not affect all members of society equally. Disadvantaged groups, particularly low-income individuals, older people, people with disabilities, and migrants, may be more vulnerable to the negative impacts of extreme heat.

The Urban Divide project aims to raise awareness of the relationship between climate change and social inequalities, with a particular focus on environmental and climate justice. In this context, youth workers and young people with fewer opportunities are encouraged to develop a better understanding of environmental challenges, explore potential solutions, and take an active role in their local communities.

Youth Participation for Inclusive and Sustainable Cities

One of the project's main objectives is to strengthen participants' knowledge and skills in environmental justice and sustainable urban planning. Considering the needs of different social groups in urban planning, improving access to green spaces, and exploring solutions to reduce the negative impacts of extreme heat are among the key areas addressed by the project.

The project also aims to empower young people facing social, economic, or geographical barriers, enabling them to express their views on environmental issues and contribute to positive change at the local level. By enhancing the professional capacities of youth workers, the project seeks to support more effective activities in environmental justice, climate change, and inclusive youth work.

Developing Local Solutions Through International Cooperation

Bringing together partners from six countries, Urban Divide promotes international cooperation and the exchange of experiences. Sharing environmental challenges and good practices from different countries helps partners explore solutions to the climate crisis that respond to local needs. The project also aims to ensure that the knowledge and experiences gained reach wider youth networks and society, creating a lasting impact.

The Urban Divide project highlights that environmental challenges are not only ecological concerns but also matters of social justice. By strengthening the knowledge, skills, and participation of young people and youth workers, this partnership aims to encourage a more informed approach to climate change and contribute to the development of fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable cities for everyone.
