The Sea Needs You: Raising Environmental Awareness Through Non-Formal Learning

The Sea Needs You (Project No. 2024-3-TR01-KA153-YOU-000283365) was an Erasmus+ Mobility of Youth Workers project hosted by IF Association and organized by Taşköprü Yerel Eylem Grubu Derneği in Kastamonu, Türkiye, from 10–17 May 2025. Bringing together youth workers from Italy, Azerbaijan, Ireland, Spain, and Türkiye, the project created an international learning environment where participants explored marine conservation, environmental sustainability, intercultural dialogue, and innovative non-formal education methods. Through collaborative activities and practical discussions, participants strengthened both their professional competences and their commitment to protecting marine ecosystems.

A major focus of the mobility was helping participants understand the complexity and importance of marine ecosystems. Through collaborative brainstorming, concept mapping, expert-led presentations, and interactive discussions, participants explored marine biodiversity, food chains, and the relationships between marine plants and animals. These activities encouraged critical thinking, active listening, and analytical reasoning while expanding participants' scientific knowledge of marine life and increasing their appreciation of the delicate balance that sustains ocean ecosystems.

Participants also examined the causes and consequences of marine pollution by identifying the human activities that threaten marine biodiversity. Using collaborative problem-analysis techniques, they investigated the root causes of pollution, discussed its environmental impacts, and developed practical solutions that individuals and communities can implement. By evaluating different perspectives and debating possible actions, participants strengthened their problem-solving, decision-making, empathy, and critical thinking skills while recognizing the importance of transforming environmental awareness into responsible daily behaviour.

Reflection and self-evaluation formed an essential part of the learning process. Creative evaluation methods encouraged participants to express their emotions, reflect on their learning experiences, and exchange constructive feedback with one another. By interpreting visual expressions, discussing personal perspectives, and participating in open dialogue, participants improved their emotional awareness, communication skills, and ability to evaluate learning outcomes in a supportive and inclusive environment.

The project also celebrated cultural diversity through an interactive cultural exchange dedicated to Spain. Participants explored Spanish history, traditions, architecture, music, dance, and gastronomy while sharing experiences across cultures. This exchange strengthened intercultural communication, mutual respect, and appreciation for European diversity, demonstrating how cultural learning complements environmental education. Overall, The Sea Needs You equipped youth workers with innovative non-formal education methods, stronger environmental awareness, and practical tools they can apply in future Erasmus+ projects and local initiatives to promote sustainability, active citizenship, and international cooperation.
